I volunteer for a public charity, 501c3 and must purchase a performance outfit, as well as pay annual membership dues.  I receive no compensation for performing.  Can I deduct the cost of the performance outfit and the annual membership dues?

Yes, you can deduct both expenses as your out of pocket charitable donations. Here is data entry:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Deductions & Credits
  3. Charitable Donations, select Donations to Charity in 2016; once charity name is entered,  select Mileage and travel expenses - and enter your out of pocket expenses there.
