A state's portion of adjustments to income

TT says: Allocate all or a portion of the deductions reported on your federal return to IL based on the length of your residency or the source of the deduction.

I ask: Where on the federal return does one find the deduction information?

TT says: Enter the amount that applies to the time you were an IL resident or to your activities in IL.

I say: I was not an IL resident during this tax year but did work in the state.

1. Fed 1040, line 12.

The IL program generally gives you the federal amount and asks for the IL portion. You will need to review your Federal return, See How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing? to see both federal and state. Adjustments can be found on Schedule 1, part II. IL should ask you about them in the program. Deductions: sched A unless you took the standard deduction, see 1040 line 12.

2. Enter your IL income. Non-residents must file if they earned enough taxable income from Illinois sources to have a tax liability
