We paid for inpatient addiction treatment for my 28 year old son last year (2021)  His address was listed as ours, but most of the year he was in treatment.  Can we deduct the cost of the treatment for him even though he is not listed as a dependent?

Yes, you can claim medical expenses for a nondependent, but only under certain circumstances.

Exceptions exist for claiming non-dependent medical expenses on your tax return. The exceptions allow you to claim medical expenses of someone who is not your dependent. You can claim an exception for any of these people:

    • A person who was your dependent either:
      • When the service was performed
      • When the medical expense was paid
