I used Turbo Tax Free File and did not receive any additional child tax credits, nor did I receive dependent care. Is the Free File software not able to claim these credits? The irs sent me a 8812 form to complete because I have 2 dependents. When I went in to amend my return, the credit weren’t an option.

Yes, you are correct, you need a different version of the program to claim these credits.

The Free Version only supports wages and Earned Income Credit.

To claim the Child Tax Credit and the Child & Dependent Care Credit, you will need to upgrade to the Deluxe version of the program.

However, as xmasbaby0 has stated, there are different programs and they have broken them out into detail in their reply.  Please confirm your version before proceeding.

You are confusing Free File and the Free Edition.   You posted your question from the Free Edition.  That is NOT the same as Free File.

Free File is fully featured--and as long as you qualify, you can enter  child tax credit, childcare credit, etc. using Free File.

Make sure you are in Free File--NOT "Free Edition."

If you qualify to use it, there is another full-featured free version of the software:

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $36,000 or less, or $69,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

If you switch to Free File you must create a new account and new user ID.
