Question

Adult child (and her two children, my grand children) on disability. Can I claim her kids

My daughter is on social security disability and she and her two children live with my wife and I.  I was going to claim her children on my taxes as dependents but she told me that would affect her social security disability benefits.

Can I claim her kids (my grand kids) on my taxes as dependents without impacting her social security disability benefits?

Thanks in advance!

You should verify this with the Social Security Administration.

If you were claiming your daughter as a Dependent, the SSA may consider that support as 'income' and reduce her benefits by the value of housing provided, for example.

However, SSI is usually a set amount, so her children may not factor into the equation for her income and you would be able to claim them as dependents on your return.

She could be referring to other benefits, such as food stamps or Medicaid, that could be affected if someone else claims her children.

The phone number for the Social Security Administration is 1 (800) 772-1213.
