Taxes paid on a vehicle that you purchased may be eligible for a deduction as a personal property tax.

The tax must only apply to personal property you own, be based on its value and be charged on an annual basis, irrespective of when the government collects it from you.

See this TurboTax Help under When you can deduct personal property tax.

To report these expenses, follow these directions:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen click on Deductions & credits.
  • Under Your tax breaks, scroll down to Car registration fees.
  • Click on Edit/Add to the right of Car registration fees.
  • Follow instructions to report expenses.
