I am 23 years old and a little over half of my 2020 college tuition was covered with FAFSA money, but the rest I paid on my own. I also paid my own rent, car insurance, gas, and phone bill. I am leaning towards not claiming the credit, but wanted to check to make sure I'm not missing out on it if I do qualify.

If you paid more than half of your support you are not a dependent and so are eligible for the education credit. You can claim the qualified education expenses that are greater than any scholarships you received. The American Opportunity Credit has a refundable portion which you can claim even if you don’t owe any taxes.
