baby-sitter costs as tax deduction?

Hi, I am a single dad with 2 small children. Because of the covid-19 pandemic, I now spend quite a bit of money with baby-sitters due to the school closures.

It is hitting me really hard on the finances. I gave them checks that our out of my net income. One baby-sitter is making close to 2k a month with my checks. I cannot sustain this too long.

Can deduct this costs from my taxes in 2020?

2k a month is a good income actually with all this unemployment going on. Do I need to give her a 1099 or some other form so I can deduct this from my expenses? It is easy to deduct this with turbo-tax?

How does it work? Is the 1099 an easy thing to do? I really have no time to hire accounts. I need to figure this out on my own.

thank you!

No you do not have to give your childcare provider a 1099Misc.  In order to claim the childcare credit on your 2020 tax return next year, you need the childcare providers Social Security number or her Tax ID number.

For your 2020 return you will claim the child and dependent care credit.

Clarify one thing----is the sitter watching the children in YOUR home--or the sitter's home?  If she is coming to your home she is considered to be a household employee.

thx for the info. But she takes them to her home. So all I need is to input on 2020 her social security #?

thank you.

You are welcome.  Yes, you just need her SSN or her Tax ID.  Some childcare providers get a Tax ID from the IRS so they do not have to give out their Social Security number.  Either one is fine.
