Question

California 540/540NR - why is this form added? I don't have a mortgage

Hello,

I am using downloaded version on my Mac.

While I am reviewing my returns through Tax Forms, I found that the 540 Deductible Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet is added in my California return.

I don't have any mortgage. I don't own any property.

I didn't enter any home/mortgage related information, but this appears in under my California Forms.

It also inputs 12 for all Loan 1, Loan 2, ... Loan 5 on "Months load outstanding" section.

Is this form necessary to file my tax return?

Why is this added?

Thank you.

The form CA 540/NR is the form for California State income tax. It is used to report the state income wages. deductions, and credits. If CA 540 form  showed motgage and property deduction, you need to delete Schedule A  on the federal return.  To delte the form, go to Turbo Tax home screen, choose Tax Tools, then Tools.  On the Tool Center, scroll dwon and click delete form, then delete Schedule A.

Thank you for your response but I need to clarify -

The form I was talking about is "Deductible Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet"

    And I don't have a Schedule A.

    Thank you.

It sounds like you may have answered a question in the interview that is causing the software to generate the Deductible Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet.  You can delete it as follows:

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

    • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
    • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
    • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
    • Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.
