Can I add the storage unit I use for 5 months as a write off?

It depends. If you used your storage unit for a business purpose that was ordinary and necessary then you can write off the storage unit as a business expense for the five months.

 

If you used part of it for business and part of it for personal purposes, then you could only write off the business percentage. For example, if you used it 50% business and 50% personal, and the monthly rent was $100, then you could write off $50 per month.

 

If you used it as an employee, the cost would not be deductible on your federal return. You need to be self-employed.
