Question

Can I claim a 2 month temporary hotel stay at new job location under the moving expense deduction? Or is it only the expenses incurred while traveling from point A to B?

No. Deductible moving expenses are limited to:

  • Moving your household goods and personal effects (including in-transit or foreign-move storage expenses), and
  • Traveling (including lodging but not meals) to your new home.

See this link to IRS Publication 521. The illustrated example (shown in the menu on the left side of the screen) shows that temporary living expenses aren’t deductible.
