Question

Can I claim medical expenses for physical injury that was paid directly to the insurance company through a settlement I received?

At the time of accident and thereafter, my medical insurance paid on all submitted claims.  When the settlement agreement was reached, a percentage of the settlement amount was paid to the insurance company as reimbursement.

Unfortunately, no.

You can't claim medical expenses that were paid by a third party as a deduction.

You can only claim your out of pocket.

However, you also don't have to report these payments as income from the settlement.
