Question

Can I claim out-of-pocket medical expense paid to a hospital in the Bahamas for a grandparent who is a citizen of that country?

Can my grandparent be considered a qualifying relative or does her citizenship play a factor? The medical expenses total exceeds 7.5% of my AGI.

Sorry---you cannot claim medical expenses paid for a relative who is not a U.S. citizen and who is not in the U.S., Canada or Mexico.   The money you sent to your grandparent is a gift, which is not deductible.
