Question

Can I claim the Connecticut Primary Residence Property Tax Credit if I paid the tax directly, but do not own the home?

I pay the property tax directly to the town, not through the owner. The following information in TurboTax is provided on whether I qualify: "You may take credit against your 2024 Connecticut income tax liability for property tax payments you made on your: - Primary residence - Privately owned motor vehicle - leased motor vehicle" Based off of this, it would suggest that I do. Want to confirm, or find documentation from Connecticut that explicitly defines my situation.

From Connecticut Statute Sec. 12-704c (h):

"Property tax” means the amount of property tax exclusive of any interest, fees or charges thereon for which a taxpayer is liable, or in the case of any husband and wife who file a return under the federal income tax for such taxable year as married individuals filing a joint return, for which the husband or wife or both are liable, to a Connecticut political subdivision on the taxpayer's primary residence or motor vehicles;... Presumably, since you do not own the property, you are not liable for the tax.  Thus you are not eligible to take the credit.
