Can I claim the personal property tax I paid on my automobile in Virginia?

Yes, but only if you itemize your deductions and the total of your itemized deductions exceeds your standard deduction. However, you can not deduct the total amount. Only the fee that is based on the value of the vehicle is deductible .

To claim the deduction

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Federal from the left menu.
  • Go to Deductions and Credits.
  • Scroll down to Car and other things you own and click start next to car registration.
