Can I decline the child tax credit for 2021?

The children moved to another state in March and no longer live with me.

You will not be filing a 2021 tax return until next year in 2022.   If you do not claim the children on your 2021 return next year you will not get the CTC.

Great article from @SweetieJean , pay particular attention to the information under the heading of "Why you might want to opt out of the child tax credit payments this year."  It provides info on the portal being set up by the IRS that allows you to update changes that apply to you.  The plan from what we understand is for payments to start in July 2021 & be based on your most recent processed tax filing.  For an overview of the expanded child tax credit, click on the link below.
