Can I deduct hotel expenses for a new job out of town

I moved 3 hours away from my house.  The first month of my job, I was staying in a hotel while I searched for an apartment to stay in, can I deduct this?  My employer would not pay and I did not use any hotel points, etc.

No, you can not. Personal living expenses are not deductible.
