Question

Can I deduct mileage to and from physical therapy sessions and Dr appointments due to a work related injury that was covered by Workers Comp?

I was not off work but required physical therapy to alleviate pain. No workers comp income was received but I think I should be able to deduct the mileage to and from therapy as a business expense since it was required by the employer to get better.

Yes, you can deduct mileage to and from doctors appointment and physical therapy as a medical expense.

Please keep in mind the following about deducting your medical expenses:

  • You don't get the benefit if you are taking the standard deduction.
  • If you itemize deductions, you will only be able to take total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income

To enter your medical expenses, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Taxes > Deductions & Credits
  2. In the Medical section, click on the Start/Revisit box next to Medical Expenses[See Screenshot #1 below.]
  3. If you haven't yet entered any medical expenses, TurboTax will ask you if your total medical expenses exceed a certain number.  [That's the 7.5% AGI mentioned above.]     [Screenshot #2]
  4. If you think your total medical expenses will exceed that number, click the blue Yes box and continue through the interview, entering the requested information on your medical expenses.

The therapy wasn't a personal medical expense, it was required as a condition of employment. Is that still a standard medical expense even though it was work related?
