Question

Can I deduct premiums for my long term and short term disability insurance? What about premiums for vision and dental insurance?

Yes. You can deduct the premiums for vision and dental insurance that you pay with after-tax dollars.

However, unlike health insurance premiums, you can't deduct premiums paid for individual disability income insurance as a medical expense.

Because you pay the premiums with after-tax dollars, the benefits you receive are tax free.

Note that sometimes, your employer pays for an individual disability insurance policy on you.
