Can I deduct the expense of putting in a chair lift in my house because I had a heart attack in 2023 and was told by my doctor not to go up stairs?

The expense of a chair lift is tax deductible if you have a prescription from a health care provider saying you need one due to health reasons  It would be a medical expense if you itemize. You can only deduct a total medical expense greater than 7.5 percent of your AGI. 

You can claim your stairlift as a medical expense if you itemize deductions on your tax return.

You can enter this expense by going to your search bar at the top of your screen and type "medical expenses".  And then select "Jump to Medical Expenses." It will look like this:

It will take you to the screens to enter your medical expenses.  

Scroll through these screens until you get to a screen that looks like this.  You can enter your chair lift expense here.

Note: Your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions will have to exceed your Standard Deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.
