Can i deduct the state sales tax from buying a used car AND the Turbo Tax recommended sales tax amounts?

turbo tax gives an option to automatically give an average of your State sales tax, but I bought a used car last year, can I add these amounts?

Yes, you can deduct the sales tax when purchasing a used car if you are itemizing your deductions and your sales tax deduction exceeds your state income tax.

To claim the Deduction:

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Federal from the Left menu
  • Go to Deductions and Credits
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • Go to Sales Tax.
  • Click Update next to Sales Tax.
  • Click Continue.
  • Select Easy Guide
  • Click Edit next to your sales tax rate.
