Question

Can I deduct work-related travel expenses for a work trip cancelled due to Covid? I paid out-of-pocket (hotel/flight) and costs were not refundable, but I did not travel.

It depends.

If you’re self-employed or own a business, you can deduct work-related travel expenses, including vehicles, airfare, lodging, and meals. The expenses must be ordinary and necessary.(even if you didn't travel as long as you didn't get a refund).

If you are an employee, you no longer can deduct out-of-pocket travel costs in tax years 2018 through 2025 per the TCJA.

Can I deduct Travel Expenses?
