Question

can you consider glasses or health things and school things you've had to pay for a grandchild a donation if we've gotten nothing back for it?

I have been asked to help pay things for kids that parents can't afford it, so was hoping could put some of it on my tax returns.

No.   Gifts to your grandchildren are not charitable donations and cannot be deducted on a tax return.  Only donations to a recognized charity are deductible.   Helping grandchildren is just what kind and generous grandparents do if they are able to.
