Child care issue. I paid for child care in 2023. I am the custodial parent. We share custody 50/50.

When I answer yes to the "Did you pay for child and dependent care in 2023?"  I can't choose a name in the box even thought my child is listed as a dependent.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the quick response.  The child is 5.  All info is correct.  Child spends 50% of time with both parrents.  I am the I’m the custodial parent due to adjusted gorss income.

@jmcnabb19 You need to indicate that you are the custodial parent.  Only the custodial parent can get the childcare credit.   One of you had the child for more nights even if you think it was 50-50.   The parent who had the child for 183 nights is the custodial parent.

This is confusing.  What tax year are you trying to prepare a return for?   The current online software is only for 2023---it cannot be used for 2022.    Are you preparing a 2023 return and trying to use the childcare credit for 2023?

Everything is for the tax year of 2023.  I am trying to claim child care expenses for 2023.  When I get to the point of selecting the dependent, my dependent is not listed.  When I answer yes to the "Did you pay for child and dependent care in 2023?"  and go to the next screen, I can't select my child from drop down (even thought my child is listed as a dependent on my return).  All I can do is click add another dependent.  I am not sure how to proceed.

You need to check the way you entered information about the child in My Info.   Go back through the screens for the child and see if you missed something or answered something incorrectly.  Was the child's date of birth entered correctly?  Was he under the age of 13?
