Child tax credit $1,016. Does that mean per child or is it the total amount I will receive?

Form 1040 line 19 shows the child tax credit and line 28 shows the additional child tax credit.

For 2023, the Child Tax Credit is nonrefundable; if your credit exceeds your tax liability, your tax bill is reduced to zero, and any remaining unused credit is lost. However, you may be able to claim a refundable Additional Child Tax Credit for the unused balance.

  • Up to $1,600 per qualifying child in 2023 is refundable with the Additional Child Tax Credit.
  • You can find out if you're eligible for this refundable credit by completing the worksheet in IRS Form 8812.

Add lines 19 and  28 for the total Child Tax Credit for all eligible children on the return.   This represents the total Child Tax Credit that will be received.  Line 19 is the Non-refundable portion and line 28 is the refundable portion.
