Hi, I’m a resident alien and for year 2020, I claimed $500 child tax credit for my child. But since he didn’t have ITIN, I had to file return manually with ITIN application form. ITIN application form had a mistake so it was rejected and my return got filed without ITIN and hence IRS sent me a notice saying that they are adjusting my return by -$300 and rejecting child tax credit and paying me some interest amount ($200) which I should claim in this year.

now when I’m filing return for 2021 and I have my child’s ITIN number, how can I claim child tax credit for last year? I cannot find that option in TurboTax on Mac.

You can only claim 2021 Income and Expenses on Tax Year 2021 return.  You may need to file an amended return for 2020 to claim your Child Tax Credit that was disallowed by the IRS.

Here is how to prepare and file a 2020 amended return

If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.” If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending.

There are a few things you need to know before you can start the amendment process:

    1. To amend your 2020 return, you need to use the same TurboTax account that you used to file your original 2020 return.
      • If you don’t see your 2020 return under Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home page, you might be in the wrong account. Use our account recovery tool to find all of your accounts.
    2. Make sure you really need to amend, and that your 2020 return was accepted in TurboTax Online, TurboTax CD/Download, or paper-filed through the mail. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
    3. You'll need to paper file your amended return, since TurboTax doesn't currently support e-filing an amended prior-year return.

When you're ready to amend, select your product below and follow the instructions.

    TurboTax Online

    TurboTax CD/Download

If you only want to view or download your 2020 return, follow these instructions.

Thanks. Since the only change is ITIN number for my child so I just amend my last year’s return in desktop version and update ITIN? I tried that and only thing TurbkTax asked me to provide explanation for 1040-X. Is that it?

also what shall I do with $200 which IRS asked me to put as interest this year when they sent me notice last year? That’s not a real interest and just an adjustment on child tax credit.

You are correct with regard to amending your 2020 tax return, you enter a description of why you are amending it and enter the ITIN number.

If the IRS did not pay you $200 in interest income, then you shouldn't report it on your tax return. However, they may tax you on it if they believe they sent it to you later on after your file your tax return. If so, you can contact them and explain why it is not taxable and they will remove the additional tax due.

You can't claim the child tax credit for 2020 on your 2021 return.  Each year is filed independent of the other years.  In order to claim the child tax credit you would need to  Amend Your Return  for 2020.
