Question

Claiming parent as dependent

I care for my mom and support more than 50% of her expenses (food, medical, bills, etc).

I think I’d be able to claim her on my taxes as a dependent based on income and other requirements.. but, I am wondering something specifically.

If I claim her on my taxes, would that impact her benefits in any way? I know likely not SS or Medicaid etc, but she also has tax exemptions on her property taxes. Would those be impacted? The tax benefit of claiming her wouldn’t be worth it if she would lose her tax exemptions in this way.

Thanks!

It's possible she could lose her benefits.  We can only address the federal tax return in this forum.  The link below will allow you to see if you qualify to claim your mom as a dependent (Qualifying Relative) on your tax return.

Your mom might lose other benefits, like Medicaid and property tax exemption or reduction. It's important to contact those agencies to find out if she could lose them.
