If you’re asking whether you can deduct gas or other vehicle expenses for your commute to another state for work, the answer is no.

Commuting expenses are generally not deductible.

According to IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions

You can't deduct commuting expenses (the cost of transportation between your home and your main or regular place of work).

However, if you are

  • An Armed Forces reservist;

  • A qualified performing artist;

  • A fee-basis state or local government official; or,

  • An employee with impairment-related work expenses,

and you haul instruments, tools, or other items in your car to and from work, you can deduct only the additional cost of hauling the items, such as the rent on a trailer to carry the items.  See Commuting Expenses in the link above for more information.

If you’re self-employed, mileage accumulated during the course of your work may be deductible.  Please see the TurboTax Help articles What self-employed expenses can I deduct? and Reporting Self-Employment Business Income and Deductions for guidance on your self-employment income and expenses.

If this doesn’t address your question, please respond with more detailed information.
