Each week I give can foods to my church. I have the store receipts. Must I do it by week? And is there deduction for foods?

    Yes, if you are giving the food to a qualified charity such as a church, you can deduct the cost on your tax return.  You can total the amount for the year.

     

    Please note that the standard deduction has almost doubled in the last couple of years.  You will get the higher of your standard deduction or your itemized deductions.  

     

    Please see below for the standard deductions for 2019:

     

    Filing status 

     

    Single         Standard Deduction is $12,200

    Married filing joint        Standard Deduction is $24,400

    Married filing separately  Standard Deduction is $12,200

    Head of Household         Standard Deduction is $18,350

     

    There is an additional standard deduction for aged or blind - $1.300
