I'm doing my taxes and put in my tithing amount and it did not reduce the amount that I owe to the Fed Gov.  Why?

    "Usually" it is because you do not have enough other Itemized Deductions entered such that the Std Deduction has been exceeded yet.   Keep adding all your Potential deductions,a dn the software will switch over when the proper level  is reached  .

     

    Std Ded for a single person is 12,200

    Std Ded for MFJ ........................is 24,400  (LOTS of itemized deductions needed to exceed that)

     

    with some extra thrown in for each spouse who is 65 or older (or blind)

    The total amount of your itemized deductions is probably lower than your standard deduction.

     

    Please see the attached for additional information on what the standard deduction is for your filing status.
