You can't claim the value of your time, but if you itemize deductions you can enter volunteer mileage as a charitable contribution.

To enter volunteer mileage expenses in TurboTax:

  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type donations.
  • In the results box, highlight donations, then click GO.
  • You'll land on the Donations to Charity page. Click Yes.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. When you get to the Let's enter your donations one at a time screen, enter the name of the charitable organization, then click Add next to Mileage and travel expenses. (Click the first screenshot below for reference.)
  • TurboTax prompts Enter your mileage and travel expenses for Your Charity. After How often you traveled, select Once or Multiple Times, then enter your mileage information. (Click the second and third screenshots below for reference.)
  • Continue to follow the onscreen instructions to complete this section.

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
