Our son that's 40 years old is living in a house we own. He has never been married, does not work, does not have any insurance and we support him completely. Can we claim him as a dependent?

Thank you for your response.

Yes, if he had no income and you provided more than half of his support for the year then you probably qualify to claim him as a dependent. Please view the full list of qualifications below.

Qualifying Relative Rules for claiming a dependent

    • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
    • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
    • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
    • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
    • They lived with you the entire year.
    • They made less than $4,200 in 2019.
    • You provided more than half of their financial support.
