If one parent had child care deducted from their checks does that parent have to claim the dependent for the deductions? Both parents are together and in the same household but not married. Usually the dad claims the child because he makes more but this year the child care costs came out of the mothers checks from work.

If both parents live together but are not married then only ONE of you can claim the child on a tax return, and that parent is the one who claims all of the child-related credits.    Handle your personal finances any way you want to---and share the tax refund accordingly.
