Question

Do I count back property taxes that I paid last year or just what was owed last year?

I paid off several years in back property taxes last year. Can I put that amount on my 2021 Federal tax return or just what was owed for the 2021 property taxes?

What matters is the year you actually paid the property tax so you can enter what you paid.   There is a limit of $10K that can be deducted on your Schedule A for state and local taxes.

Were the back property taxes from when YOU owned the property?   If so, the answer above is correct.

But if you paid off back property taxes that were imposed upon a previous owner of the property, the answer is very different.
