There is no specific tax credit for having an autistic child. however, there are many tax credits that you might be eligible for that have nothing to do with the child's autism.

As a parent of a child with special needs such as autism, you can claim the Child Tax Credit on your return if you meet the other criteria; as Mike9241 states above, there is not a specific tax credit for this condition. In addition, you may qualify for the Child Care Credit, and you may have qualifying medical expenses.

The IRS defines a dependent as a qualifying child (under age 19 or under 24 if a full-time student, or any age if permanently and totally disabled) or a qualifying relative. A qualifying dependent can have income but cannot provide more than half of their own annual support. Please see this TurboTax tips article for more information about the rules for claiming dependents.

Please see this TurboTax article with video for more information about tax credits for disabled dependents.

Do I get a credit or deduction if my child is disabled?

If your child is older than 12 and you need to pay someone to take care of him while you work, you can say he is disabled and you can still get the childcare credit on your federal return.   Or if he is 19 or older you may still be able to claim him as a qualifying child dependent on your federal return.

Aside from those things, there is no federal tax advantage to saying that your child is disabled.   Your state tax laws might be different.
