If your child only receives unearned income during the year, you can include it on your return.  In TurboTax follow these steps to determine whether you can claim your child's income on your return:

  1. Select Search in the top right hand of your screen,
  2. Enter child income,
  3.  Select Jump to child income,
  4. Answer Yes to both Any Child's Income? and Child Required to File?
  5. Select Continue on the Reporting Your Child's Income screen,
  6. Work through the questions to determine if the income can be included on your return or if your child needs to file their own return.

If your child's income for the year is any of the following your child would have to file their own return:

  1. Child's unearned income was more than $1,100, or
  2. Child's earned income was more than $12,200, or
  3. Child's gross income was more than the larger of $1,100 or their earned income (up to $11,850) plus $350.
