Do I have to file expenses since they are less than 24,000 and if so how does the computer help me

    No - you do not have to enter your itemized deductions if they are less than the standard deduction of $24,000 (if you are married and filing jointly).

    However, you may want to enter your deductions anyway because they may help you on your state return.  Some  states (not all) allow the taxpayer to itemize their deductions on the state return even though they took the standard deduction on their federal return.

    However, if these are business (self-employment) expenses, they must be reported. They go on Schedule C, not Schedule A.
