Do I have to prove my vehicle mileage if I used my car for some of my independent contracting work?

Not with your tax return, but you should keep your trip log with date, start and end mileage and trip reason for at least 3 years in case the IRS asks for it.

If audited, the IRS does not have to award any deduction or expense that you can't prove.
