Question

Do my dependent parents have to show my support as "income" on their returns?

I support my retired parents and would like to claim them as dependents (they meet all the IRS tests on income, over one half comes from me etc. etc.) In my case, instead of giving them money directly, I pay their rent, provide transportation, pay for some big household items (like furniture etc.).

My question is: if I claim them as dependents, would they have to declare my help as "income" on their returns?

If you claim your parents as dependents on your return, discuss it with them. When they file their return, they do not claim your support as income. They would have to mark that they are being claimed by someone else.

Here are the filing requirements for dependents

If your parents must file, and claim themselves, the IRS is gong to start looking into the issue so be sure you are all on the same page.
