Does anyone have experience with how to deal with the advance child tax credit when you and your ex claim your child on alternating years?

My ex claimed her on 2020 so she received the advance payments but they were an advance on the 2021 tax year. I did not receive them and now when I am preparing to file, TurboTax is trying to give me the full 3,000 credit which would be double dipping. Looking for any advice! Thanks in advance!!

In this case double dipping is legitimate. You are entitled to the full credit since you did not receive any in 2021. Your ex might have to pay back some or all of the advanced credit unless the ex is low income.

Another quirk in the tax law is the third stimulus payment ... you got it on the child last year and the ex who is claiming the child on the 2021 return will ALSO get the $1400 and this is a legal double dip.

I actually didn’t receive the third stimulus for my daughter as my ex claimed her for 2020 so I only got my stimulus in 2021. I know TurboTax asked about the stimulus and I’m getting a nice credit as what TurboTax thought I should get versus what I got was different.

thanks for your help!
