Does the amount for medical expenses include amounts covered by car insurance?

If I underwent major surgery which was paid for by car insurance, would the amount be deductible on our federal taxes? For bonus points: what if the amount wasn't actually paid until this year (not the year for which we're filing)?

You can only deduct medical expenses in the year paid and only paid with out of pocket funds which were not reimbursed.
