Does turbo tax attempt to register me to vote? It seems like it asked me a question about voter registration in the early process of starting my tax return

No, there was not a question related to voter registration. However, there is a question on the IRS Form 1040 (or 1040A or 1040EZ) that asks if you want $3 to go to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund. This excerpt from the IRS Instructions for Form 1040 provides details:

"This fund helps pay for Presidential election campaigns. The fund reduces candidates' dependence on large contributions from individuals and groups and places candidates on an equal financial footing in the general election. The fund also helps pay for pediatric medical research. If you want $3 to go to this fund, check the box. If you are filing a joint return, your spouse can also have $3 go to the fund. If you check a box, your tax or refund won't change."

I had a similar question. At the end of the state pre-filing, the software asks if I want to register to vote. I already am registered and vote in every election, so I skip that/answer "no." I just wonder if I'm correct to do that, answer "no," or if I should say yes to that. It's an odd question for a tax software and has NO information about why it's asking that (since I'm a registered voter). There is nothing to say "If you're already registered to vote, skip this question." It should have a better question, like "If you're not already registered to vote, would you like to register now?"

Help us out, Turbo Tax. Give us some info we can look up on this so we don't have to wait for answers like the ones below that say the software DOES NOT ask...it most certainly DOES ask.

No is the right answer since you are registered. Currently, MN requires software offer a chance to register to vote so the program just asks everyone. There may be more states joining in and this makes it easy to register to vote when you move to one of those states. Otherwise, it does not apply.
