EV charging station credit

I had the pain of going through multiple tax specialists/advisors with regarding to the  EV Charging station credit today. Needless to say, the experience was exhausted.

With the recent update, you can only be qualified for EV charging stations credits if one of the 2 conditions below are met.

  1. Low-income community census tracts: Census tracts as described in the "low-income community" definition of the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) (Internal Revenue Code section 45D).
  2. Non-urban census tracts: Census tracts defined as "non-urban" according to Treasury/IRS guidance.

I can't tell if my property met one of those conditions. Turbo tax provided a link and instruction how you can find the GEOID of your property. If the 11-digit GEOID is included IRS appendix B, then you should be eligible.  My GEOID is included in that list but Turbotax still said that I'm not eligible.

Any guidance is appreciated

It could be that there is another reason that you would be ineligible for the charging station credit, but the message on the screen does not explain it well.

To take a closer look at the situation and explain what it happening, I would need a diagnostic copy of your tax file.  The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.

If you would like to provide us with the diagnostic file, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using and what states you are filing in a follow-up thread.  You would also need to include the Census tract number you are using, because that information will be redacted as well.

Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:

    • Sign in to your account and be sure you are in your tax return.
    • Select Tax Tools in the menu to the left.
    • Select Tools.
    • Select Share my file with agent.
    • A pop-up message will appear, select OK to send the sanitized diagnostic copy to us.
    • Post the token number here.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:

    • Select Online at the top of the screen.
    • Select Send Tax File to Agent.
    • Click OK.
    • Post the token number here.
