Question

Ex claimed son last year and got 1/2 child credit, I'm claiming this year and it asks if I received any child tax credit payments, which I said no. Doesn't seem correct?

Not sure why it's giving me the full added child tax credit on my return if half was already paid out to to my ex last year? And she said she will be getting the other half on her taxes this year (which is ok) but not sure how to fill this out?

If your child's mother received the advance child tax credit and you claim your child in 2021, you will receive the Child Tax credit. You should say on your tax return that you did not receive the advance child tax credit and you will receive the full child tax credit.

As for your child's mother, she should have received form 6419 from the IRS and has to report the amount received on her tax return. Whether she will have to repay the advance depends on whether her adjusted gross income qualifies her for repayment protection.
