For the energy credit form 5695, if the wood stove is an approved model for EPA 2020 standards, can the stove be used or does it have to be a new stove?

It needs to be new.  This says "originally placed in service by the taxpayer", which means you are the first owner/user of it.

Thanks for the explanation! The wording of "originally placed in service..." does seem to imply a new stove. I wish they allowed approved used stoves. Whether the stove is used or stove, the purchase is an energy improvement.
