Question

For the work related meals portion of work expenses, does lunch count or is it just travel food costs?

There are two kinds of meal expenses that are deductible. Meals that are taken while you are traveling away from the location of your tax home for business are deductible, if you are traveling so far that you must stay overnight or longer.  Neil expenses for entertainment purposes in order to generate a new business, such as entertaining new clients, may be deductible on your state tax return, although I believe the federal deduction was eliminated.

Niels taken in the area of your tax home or never tax-deductible. For example, if you buy lunch at a food cart outside your office, that is not deductible, because you would always have to provide yourself a lunch of some kind and your ordinary living expenses are never tax-deductible. Only expenses incurred in connection with travel for work purposes, where travel means far enough from home that you have to at least stay overnight.
