Form 1098 Box 10 'Other' Shows TAXES PAID - Doesn't Match Escrow (US)

Hello,

I'm filing in the US and have a 1098 from my mortgage lender. In Box 10, it's labeled 'Other' with a value listed as 'TAXES PAID.' However, this amount doesn't match anything in the escrow section. Which figure do I use in TurboTax under 'Property (Real Estate) Taxes Paid'? Should i rely on what's listed in Box 10 to confirm my actual property tax disbursements? I want to ensure I'm claiming the correct deduction.

Thanks,

Matt

You should only rely on box 10 if you are comfortable that the number is accurate.  It sounds like you may need to investigate it further. If you cannot reconcile the taxes paid on Form 1098 Box 10 and your escrow statement, you can contact your local tax collector to verify.

However, when you review your escrow statement, make sure you locate the disbursements for property taxes.  That is what you paid. ‌Monthly escrow is just an estimate of the year's taxes, often includes extra to keep a balance in the escrow account, and property insurance.
