Question

Form 1098 box 7 not checked but box 8 had an address. Can I deduct my mortgage interest and if so how do I input it on turbotax?

Yes, you can enter your mortgage interest into TurboTax.

Whether or not it is deductible and exactly where you enter the information depends a wide range of factors beyond how boxes 7 and 8 are filled out.

I am assuming this is mortgage interest on your home, where you live, and that you don't use your home for business or rental purposes. If that is not the case, respond back with more detail and TurboTax can guide you further.

To enter your 1098-INT for your home mortgage interest:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Select Federal, then Deductions & Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098), select Start or Edit.
  4. Answer the first question Yes, or select Edit to the right of your 1098-INT entry.
  5. Follow the instructions to import your 1098-INT, or select Change how I enter my form at the bottom.
  6. Select an option for entering your 1098-INT form.
  7. Keep going until you answer all of the questions in the section.
