Form 8889 is required if you had contributions to or withdrawals from an HSA.  It is scheduled to be released in an update on 1/26.  If you don't include the form, the IRS will assume that your withdrawals or contributions were not allowed, and will send you a bill for additional taxes and penalties.  At that point you will have to pay the bill or send them an amended return to fix the problem.

If you asked for a reminder, turbotax should email you when the form is ready.

What version of Turbo Tax do I need? I only have a w2 and the HSA form8889?

You need the Deluxe version of TurboTax, because you need to add form 8889, which is not part of the Free product.

Note that this answer is for the Online product. The Basic product which does include form 8889 is only available in the desktop software.

Why can I get Form 8889 on the IRS website but it's not updated here in Turbotax??  I don't want to wait until 1/26!  I want to file today!

Click the link for Federal Forms Availability for all versions of TurboTax. Then, click on whether you are using Windows or Mac. Form 8889 is available in TurboTax.

To make sure your program is completely up to date, you can do a manual update

Our condolences for the passing of your son.

Being kept from filing cause 8889-t still doesn't seem to be ready ...is this correct ? I signed up for updates and got email from TurboTax that forms are ready but the desktop app (2019.41.11.194) doesn't seem to have an update and I still can't file because this and 8995 have a "Ready Soon" message...anyone else still see this ?

The Form 8889-T should be available for filing. Are you using a Mac? If so, try this workaround:

On the Turbotax Menu click on "Turbotax" in the upper far left, then hold down the "option" button on your Mac keyboard. When you hold the "option" button it will change the "check for updates" to read "download latest updates". While continuing to hold down the "option" button click on "download latest updates".
