Garage doors do not have energy star ratings. I installed 3 with 18.4R value.
How can I claim this on taxes?

If your doors are eligible for the Home Energy Improvement Tax Credit, you would claim them as doors in the Home Energy Credit section. Doors are eligible for a credit 30% tax credit of up to $250 per door with a $500 max credit.

in order to claim them, they must have an energy star rating. You can use this link to determine if the doors meet the rating qualifications for your climate zone.  The climate zone link will tell you the U-Factor and SHGC rating that the doors must meet for your area to claim the credit. The doors that meet the Energy Star requirements in your climate zone should have labels on them that indicate they are energy star certified.

The Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit is a nonrefundable credit to qualify. A nonrefundable credit provides no benefit or less benefit to you when you have no tax liability or less liability than your credit. To determine if you have enough of a tax liability to claim the credit, look at line 16 on your 1040, then also look at line 24. If the amount on line 16 is less than the full credit, then this is the maximum amount of the credit you use.  If you have other credits, that may also reduce the tax liability, this may also reduce the amount of the credit you receive.

Also, the following will need to apply in order to qualify:

    • The home is located in the US
    • It is your primary residence
    • It must be an existing home improvement and not related to new construction
    • The product must be new and not used
